The group stage matches are played by each nation home and away, with the group stage typically occurring throughout autumn. The winners of each group in leagues B, C, and D are promoted to the next higher league, whilst the teams that finish bottom of their groups in league A and B get relegated to the next lower league. Each winner of the groups in league A advance to the Nations League finals, consisting of the semi-finals 3rd place playoff, and the final. Furthermore, following the 2024/2025 season, a new knockout round has been introduced in which the top 2 teams from every league A group will face off to determine the last 4 who have a spot in the finals. This innovative format not only creates excitement through the promotions and relegations of the group stages, but also further appeals to fans through its knockout round for the top teams of the tournament. With each nation being sorted into groups based on their football rankings, this allows teams to compete against opponents of similar strength, creating balanced, yet highly competitive encounters at every level of the Nations League whilst also presenting the opportunity for emerging teams to rise through the ranks while challenging Europe’s elite.
