Stade Velodrome, Marseille, France Opened in 1937, the Stade Vélodrome, also known as Orange Vélodrome for sponsorship reasons, has served as the home for Ligue 1 team Marseille since its inception. With a current capacity of 67,000, the stadium was originally constructed for the 1938 World Cup, replacing Marseille's smaller original home, Stade L'Huveaune.
During the 1938 World Cup, the Stade Vélodrome hosted a first-round match and the Italy vs Brazil semi-final. Initially featuring cycling and running tracks around the pitch, these were gradually removed as the stands underwent expansion. While the stadium remained largely unchanged, it underwent some refurbishment for the Euro 1984 championship. The most significant transformation occurred in the lead-up to the 1998 World Cup, resulting in the recognizable round-shaped spectator stands and an expanded capacity of around 60,000. The Stade Vélodrome stands as a historic venue, witnessing decades of football history and hosting various international competitions.
